What Are Offshore Base Operations?

The offshore base operations are related to exploration, exploration drilling, development drilling, production, workover, and transportation are all examples of offshore operations. Seismic surveys are used in offshore exploration.

All different types of different offshore platforms

There are several different types of offshore platforms that are crucial to be concerned on which some of them are:

  • The drilling barges:

Typically used for inland, shallow water drilling. This is common in lakes, swamps, rivers, and canals. Drilling barges are large, floating platforms that must be towed from one location to another by tugboat.

  • The jack up platforms/rigs:

With one exception, jackup rigs are similar to drilling barges. After being towed to the drilling site, three or four “legs” are lowered until they rest on the seafloor. As opposed to a floating barge, this allows the working platform to rest above the surface of the water.

  • The semi-submersible platforms/rigs:

This is an offshore oil rig with a floating drill unit that includes columns and pontoons that will submerge to a predetermined depth if flooded with water. The most common type of offshore drilling rig is a semi-submersible rig, which combines the benefits of submersible rigs with the ability to drill in deep water.

  • The drillships:

Drillships are precisely what they sound like: ships designed to conduct drilling operations. These vessels are specifically designed to transport drilling platforms to deep-sea locations. A typical drillship will have a drilling platform and derrick in the middle of its deck, in addition to all of the equipment found on a large ocean ship.

  • The fixed platforms:

In some cases, in shallow water, a platform can be physically attached to the sea floor. This is what is referred to as a fixed platform rig in the image above. The legs are made of concrete or steel and extend down from the platform, where they are secured to the seafloor with piles.

  • The tension leg platforms:

The Seastar platform is a larger version of the tension leg platform. The platform’s long, flexible legs are attached to the seafloor and run up to it.
